High speed Expendable Aerial Target – ABHYAS – successfully flight-tested off Odisha coast [29 Jun 2022]

ABHYAS – High Speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) was successfully flight-tested from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha. The performance of the aircraft at low altitudes including sustained level and high maneuverability was demonstrated during the test flight. The target aircraft was flown from a ground-based controller in a pre-designated low-altitude flight path, which was monitored by various tracking sensors deployed by ITR, including radar and an electro-optical targeting system. ABHYAS is designed & developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The air vehicle was launched using twin under-slung boosters which provide the initial acceleration to the vehicle. It is powered by a small gas turbine engine to sustain a long endurance flight at high subsonic speed. The target aircraft is equipped with Micro-Electromechanical Systems-based Inertial Navigation System for navigation along with the Flight Control Computer for guidance and control along with Indigenous Radio Altimeter for very low altitude flight and Data Link for encrypted communication between the Ground Control Station and Target Aircraft. The vehicle is programmed for fully autonomous flight.

Ranjit Rath Named Next CMD of Oil India Limited [29 Jun 2022]

Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has selected Geoscientist Ranjit Rath as the next Chairman and Managing Director(CMD) of Oil India Limited (OIL). He was serving as the CMD of Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd.(MECL). Sushil Chandra Mishra, the current CMD of OIL will superannuate on 30th June 2022.

T Raja Kumar appointed as president of the FATF [29 Jun 2022]

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has appointed T. Raja Kumar of Singapore as the President. He was appointed for the term of 2 years, which starts from July 1, 2022, to 2024. He succeeds Dr. Marcus Player of Germany.

Indigenously-developed Laser-Guided ATGM successfully tested by DRDO [28 Jun 2022]

Indigenously-developed Laser-Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) was successfully test-fired from Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Army at KK Ranges with support of Armoured Corps Centre & School (ACC&S) Ahmednagar. In the test, the ATGM hit the bull’s eye with textbook precision and successfully defeated the target at minimum ranges. Telemetry systems recorded the satisfactory flight performance of the missile. The all-indigenous ATGM employs a tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) protected armoured vehicles. The ATGM has been developed with multi-platform launch capability and is currently undergoing technical evaluation trials from 120 mm rifled gun of MBT Arjun. Engaging the targets at lower ranges is a challenge due to the dimensional constraints of tank-launched ATGMs, which has been successfully accomplished by the ATGM for MBT Arjun. With the trial, the ATGM’s capability to engage targets from minimum to maximum range has been established. Earlier the trials have been successful for maximum range.

PADMA, the Centralised Pay System for Indian Coast Guard launched [28 Jun 2022]

Pay Roll Automation for Disbursement of Monthly Allowances (PADMA), an automated Pay & Allowances module for the Indian Coast Guard was inaugurated by Shri Rajnish Kumar, Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA), Ministry of Defence. PADMA is an automated platform leveraging the latest technology which will provide seamless and timely disbursal of Pay & Allowances to around 15,000 Indian Coast Guard personnel. This module has been developed under the aegis of the Defense Accounts Department and will be operated by the Pay Accounts Office Coast Guard, Noida. The launch marked the beginning of the Centralized Pay System (CPS), the foundation of which is being laid down by the Defence Accounts Department Headquarters to provide one-stop pay accounting solutions for all organizations under the Ministry.

Indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter MK III squadron commissioned into Indian Coast Guard in Porbandar, Gujarat [28 Jun 2022]

835 Squadron (CG), an indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) MK III squadron, was commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard at its Air Enclave in Porbandar, Gujarat. The ALH MK III helicopters have been indigenously manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). They feature state-of-the-art equipment including advanced RADAR as well as Electro-optical sensors, Shakti engines, a full glass cockpit, high-intensity searchlight, advanced communication systems, an automatic identification system as well a SAR homer. The features enable them to undertake maritime reconnaissance as well as carry out SAR at extended ranges even while operating from ships during both day and night. The aircraft has the ability to switch roles from an offensive platform with a heavy machine gun to that of a benign one carrying a Medical Intensive Care Unit to facilitate the transfer of critically ill patients.

Parameswaran Iyer as the new CEO of NITI Aayog [24 Jun 2022]

Government has appointed retired IAS officer Parameswaran Iyer as the new CEO of NITI Aayog. Iyer, 1981-batch IAS officer of UP cadre, will replace Amitabh Kant to become the third chief executive officer of the Government of India’s public policy think tank.

Tapan Deka is new IB chief [24 Jun 2022]

Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) Tapan Deka has been appointed the new chief of the central intelligence agency. He will replace incumbent Arvind Kumar after his tenure comes to an end on June 30. Current chief of Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) Samant Goel, meanwhile, has been given another extension of one year in his tenure which comes to an end on June 30.

Ruchira Kamboj was appointed India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations [21 Jun 2022]

Senior diplomat Ruchira Kamboj was appointed India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. Kamboj is a 1987-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer presently serving as India’s envoy to Bhutan becoming the first female Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan. She will succeed T S Tirumurti as the Indian ambassador to the UN.

India jumps 6 places on IMD’s World Competitiveness Index [15 Jun 2022]

India has witnessed the sharpest rise among the Asian economies, with a six-position jump from 43rd to 37th rank on the annual World Competitiveness Index compiled by the Institute for Management Development, largely due to gains in economic performance. Denmark has moved to the top of the 63-nation list from the third position last year, while Switzerland slipped from the top ranking to the second position and Singapore regained the third spot from fifth, a global study showed.

Anand Mahindra, Venu Srinivasan, 2 others nominated as directors on RBI board [14 Jun 2022]

The government nominated industrialists Anand Mahindra, Pankaj Patel, and Venu Srinivasan as well as former IIM-A professor Ravindra Dholakia as part-time non-official directors to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) board. The appointments will be for four years with effect from June 14, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, the RBI said in a statement.

Cabinet approves MoA by India for establishment of BIMSTEC Technology Transfer Centre at Colombo, Sri Lanka [14 Jun 2022]

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved a Memorandum of Association (MoA) by India for the establishment of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Technology Transfer Facility (TTF) was signed by the BIMSTEC member countries at the 5th BIMSTEC Summit held at Colombo, Sri Lanka on 30th March 2022. The main objectives of the BIMSTEC TTF are to coordinate, facilitate and strengthen cooperation in technology transfer among the BIMSTEC Member States by promoting the transfer of technologies, sharing of experiences, and capacity building. The TTF shall facilitate the transfer of technologies among the BIMSTEC Member States, amongst other things, in the following priority areas Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Information and Communication Technology, Space technology applications, Agricultural technology, Food processing technology, Pharmaceutical technology automation, New and renewable energy technology automation, New and Renewable energy technology, Oceanography, Nuclear Technology Applications, E-waste, and solid waste management technology, Health Technologies, Technologies pertinent to Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation.

Cabinet clears ‘AGNIPATH’ scheme for recruitment of youth in the Armed Forces [14 Jun 2022]

The Union Cabinet approved an attractive recruitment scheme for Indian youth to serve in the Armed Forces. The scheme is called AGNIPATH and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers. AGNIPATH allows patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the Armed Forces for a period of four years. The AGNIPATH Scheme has been designed to enable a youthful profile of the Armed Forces. It will provide an opportunity to the youth who may be keen to don the uniform by attracting young talent from the society who are more in tune with contemporary technological trends and plough back skilled, disciplined, and motivated manpower into the society.

Cabinet approves Development of New Greenfield Airport Dholera, Ahmedabad [14 Jun 2022]

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal for the development of Phase I of New Greenfield Airport at Dholera, Gujarat at an estimated cost of Rs. 1305 crore, to be completed within 48 months. The project is being implemented by Dholera International Airport Company Limited (DIACL), which is a Joint Venture Company comprising the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Government of Gujarat (GoG), and the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) holding equity in the ratio of 51:33:16.

Indian diplomat Amandeep Singh Gill appointed as UN chief’s Envoy on Technology [11 Jun 2022]

Amandeep Singh Gill of India has been appointed as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ Envoy on Technology. A thought leader in digital technology, Gill is the Chief Executive Officer of the International Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence Research Collaborative (I-DAIR) project, based at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, stated the UN Director general.

Para Shooting World Cup 2022: Avani Lekhara clinches second Gold Medal [11 Jun 2022]

Young Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara continued her rich vein of form to clinch her second gold medal at the ongoing Chateauroux 2022 World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in France. Lekhara shot 458.3 in the R8 – Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions SH1 finals to take the gold ahead of experienced Paralympic stars Veronica Vadovicova (456.6) of Slovakia and Sweden’s Anna Normann (441.9). Vadovicova and Normann took the silver and bronze respectively.

Nineteen-year-old Peddi Rahul Srivathsav’s dream came true when he crossed the ELO mark of 2500 to clinch the Grand Master title. Rahul is the fourth GM from Telangana after Arjun Erigaisi in 2018, Harsha Bharathakoti in 2019, and Raja Rithvik in 2021. He is the 74th in a long list from India pioneered by Viswanathan Anand.

Five countries elected to UNSC as non-permanent members [10 Jun 2022]

Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland were elected to the UN Security Council as non-permanent members for the 2023-2024 term and will replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway at the horse-shoe table from January 1 next year. Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland will join Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, and the UAE as well as the five permanent members China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US as UNSC members for the year 2023. India’s two-year term at the UNSC as a non-permanent member will end in December 2022, when it was also holding the Presidency of the powerful UN organ.

Meghalaya win a UN award [10 Jun 2022]

Meghalaya recently won the ‘Best Project’ award at the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Geneva for its paperless governance initiative, called ‘e-Proposal System’. The initiative is a part of the Meghalaya Enterprise Architecture (MeghEA), set up in 2019 as part of the Digital India Mission, to improve service delivery to the state’s residents. The goal of MeghEA — implemented by the state’s planning department — is to standardize and organise the government department’s IT structure.

RBI hikes Repo Rate by 50 basis points [08 Jun 2022]

The Monetary Policy Committee of Reserve Bank of India, which met from 6-8 June 2022, has unanimously decided to hike the Repo Rate by 50 basis points to 4.90 %. Consequently, Standing Deposit Facility Rate stands adjusted to 4.65% and the Marginal Standing Facility rate and Bank Rate to 5.15%. The MPC also decided to remain focused on the withdrawal of accommodation to ensure that inflation remains within the target going forward while supporting growth.

Cabinet approves Transfer of 10 In-orbit Communication Satellites from Government of India to M/s. NewSpace India Ltd.(NSIL) [08 Jun 2022]

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the transfer of 10 in-orbit communication satellites from the Government of India (Gol) to M/s.NewSpace India Ltd. (NSIL), a wholly-owned Public Sector Enterprise of GOI under the administrative control of the Department of Space.The Union Cabinet has also approved increasing the authorized share capital of NSIL from Rs.1000 crore to Rs.7500 crore. Transfer of these assets to NSIL will further provide the desired financial autonomy to the company to realize capital-intensive programmes/ projects and thereby offering huge employment potential and technology spin-off to other sectors of the economy. This approval is expected to trigger domestic economic activity in the space sector and increase India’s share in the global space market.The Space Sector reforms mandated NSIL to undertake end-to-end commercial space activities and function as a full-fledged satellite operator. NSIL functioning as a single-window operator will also facilitate the ease of doing business in the space sector. NSIL Board will now be empowered to price the transponders as per the market dynamics and global trends in the Satellite Communication sector. NSIL is also authorized to offer and allocate capacity as per its internal policies and guidelines.

Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-4, successfully tested [06 Jun 2022]

A successful training launch of an Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-4, was carried out from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha. The successful test was part of routine user training launches carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command. The launch validated all operational parameters as also the reliability of the system. The successful test reaffirms India’s policy of having a ‘Credible Minimum Deterrence’ Capability.

Indian Army Contingent Participates In Multinational Joint Exercise “Ex Khaan Quest 2022” Hosted By Mongolia [06 Jun 2022]

A Multinational Peacekeeping exercise “Ex Khaan Quest 2022” featuring participation from military contingents from 16 countries have commenced in Mongolia today. Mr. Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, the Hon’ble President of Mongolia inaugurated the Exercise in an impressive ceremony organized at the exercise location in Mongolia. Indian Army is represented by a contingent from the LADAKH SCOUTS. The 14-day exercise is aimed at enhancing interoperability, building military to military relationships, and developing peace support operations and military readiness among participating nations. The exercise will also enable sharing of best practices between the Armed Forces of participating nations and will include field training exercises, combat discussions, lectures, and demonstrations. The military exercise will enhance the level of defense cooperation between the Indian Army and participating countries, especially with the Mongolian Armed Forces which will enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Dutch documentary film Turn Your Body to the Sun which tells the incredible story of a Soviet Prisoner of War, has won the prestigious Golden Conch award for the Best Documentary Film at MIFF 2022. The top award of the Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short Fiction, and Animation Films was presented by the Governor of Maharashtra Shri Bhagat Singh Koshiyari at the valedictory ceremony held at the Nehru Centre, Mumbai. The Award carries a Golden Conch, a Certificate, and a cash prize of Rs 1 million (Rs 10 lakhs).

The government has appointed Canara Bank executive director A. Manimekhalai as the new managing director and chief executive officer (MD & CEO) of Union Bank of India for a period of three years. Manimekhalai holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in marketing from Bangalore University and has also cleared the Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB) exam, a premium test conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance.

Benzema named Champions League Player of the Season [01 Jun 2022]

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has been named the Champions League Player of the Season after a stellar 2020-21 campaign where he finished as top scorer, UEFA said. France international Benzema, 34, won the competition for the fifth time as Real beat Liverpool 1-0 in the final, having netted 15 goals in 12 games including hat-tricks against Paris St Germain and Chelsea in the knockout stages.

New Jalpaiguri-Dhaka Mitali Express [01 Jun 2022]

Passenger train connectivity between India and Bangladesh took a step forward with the railway ministers of the two countries virtually flagging off New Jalpaiguri-Dhaka Mitali Express. The train made its inaugural run from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in West Bengal. The two countries already operate Maitree and Bandhan express trains connecting Kolkata with Dhaka and Khulna respectively.
