PM inaugurates the Semicon India Conference 2022 [29 Apr 2022]

Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated SemiconIndia Conference 2022, the global semiconductor conclave designed to bring together key stakeholders to showcase existing capabilities, ideate innovations, and discuss global best practices. The flagship conclave with the theme Catalyzing India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem is being held in Bengaluru from 29th April to 1st May 2022. The conference aligns with the larger national narratives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat and is pegged as the launchpad for India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The brightest minds in the sector have come together to help actualize India’s aspirations of becoming a superpower in the semiconductor sector. The three-day conclave is designed to provide impetus to India’s semiconductor strategy and chart its future course of action and growth milestones.

Lieutenant General Baggavalli Somashekar Raju is appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and will assume his office on 01 May 2022. An alumnus of Sainik School Bijapur and National Defence Academy, he was commissioned in the JAT Regiment on 15th December 1984. He commanded his Battalion during OP PARAKRAM in the Western Theatre and in Jammu & Kashmir. He also holds the distinction of commanding the Uri brigade along the Line of Control, a Counter Insurgency Force, and the Chinar Corps in the Kashmir Valley. The General Officer also served as the Commandant, of the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan. During his illustrious career spanning 38 years, he has tenanted many important regimental, staff, and instructional appointments in the Army Head Quarters and in field formations to include, including Colonel Military Secretary Legal in Military Secretary branch, Brigadier General Staff of the operationally active White Knight Corps, Deputy Director General Military Operations & Director General Staff Duties. Prior to taking over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, the General Officer was tenanting the appointment of Director General Military Operations during the standoff on the LAC.

Atal Tunnel receives IBC Best Infrastructure Project award [28 Apr 2022]

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Engineering Marvel Atal Tunnel built in Rohtang of Himachal Pradesh received Indian Building Congress (IBC) ‘Best Infrastructure Project’ award on April 28, 2022 in New Delhi. More than thirty state of the art infrastructures were nominated for the prestigious awards, the strategic tunnel was adjudged by the Jury of IBC as the Best Projects for Excellence in Built Environment in 2021. Director General BRO, Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry received the award during 25th annual Convention of IBC for the stupendous achievement of BRO in constructing this engineering marvel connecting Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti Valley.

Cabinet approves construction of 540 Megawatt Kwar Hydro Electric project [27 Apr 2022]

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the investment of Rs.4526.12 crore for 540 Megawatt (MW) Kwar Hydro Electric Project located on river Chenab, in Kishtwar district of Union Territory of Jammy and Kashmir. The project will be implemented by M/s. Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Limited (M/s. CVPPL) a joint venture company between NHPC and JKSPDC with equity contribution of 51% and 49% respectively on 27.04.2022.

Cabinet approves opening of Indian Mission in Lithuania [27 Apr 2022]

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has accorded approval to the opening of a new Indian Mission in Lithuania in 2022. Opening of Indian Mission in Lithuania will help expand India’s diplomatic footprint, deepen political relations and strategic cooperation, enable growth of bilateral trade, investment and economic engagements, facilitate stronger people-to-people contacts, allow for more sustained political outreach in multilateral fora and help garner support for India’s foreign policy objectives. Indian Mission in Lithuania will also better assist the Indian community and protect their interests.

Pune entrepreneur wins US honour for providing solutions for clean potable water during calamities [25 Apr 2022]

An entrepreneur from Pune has been honoured with a gold prize in the industrial technology category at the prestigious Edison Awards ceremony in the United States. Rahul Pathak, who runs a firm called Aqua Plus, won recognition last week for his innovative solution of making clean potable water available quickly at affordable prices for people facing natural calamities like floods and earthquakes.

Gautam Adani overtakes Warren Buffett to become world’s fifth richest person [25 Apr 2022]

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani has become the fifth richest person in the world, overtaking legendary investor Warren Buffett. According to a Forbes report, the 59-year-old Adani has an estimated net worth of $123.7 billion, as of 22nd April 2022, passing Buffett’s $121.7 billion fortune. Industrialist Gautam Adani Gautam Adani has added $43 billion to his wealth in 2022, a stellar spike of 56.2% in his portfolio, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Adani is now only behind the four richest tycoons in the world, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates ($130.2 billion), Bernard Arnault ($167.9 billion), and Jeff Bezos ($170.2 billion), and Elon Musk ($269.7 billion). Adani’s estimated $123.7 billion net worth makes him the richest person in India.

Crew of first private flight to ISS head back to Earth [25 Apr 2022]

The crew of the first fully private mission to the International Space Station departed the orbiting laboratory on Monday to head back to Earth. The three businessmen and a former NASA astronaut had spent more than two weeks on the station on a history-making mission organized by startup company Axiom Space. The SpaceX capsule was undocked from the ISS at 0110 GMT for the return trip and was scheduled to land in the ocean off the coast of Florida at around 1:00 pm local time (1700 GMT). The four men – three of whom paid tens of millions of dollars for the rare chance to take part in the mission – were originally scheduled to spend only eight days on the space station.

PM Modi receives first Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award [24 Apr 2022]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday received the first Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award for his selfless service to the nation and society. The award has been instituted in memory and honor of the legendary singer who passed away at the age of 92 years in Mumbai earlier this year. The family and the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Smruti Pratishthan charitable trust issued a statement where they asserted that the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar award will be conferred to a single individual every year who made a ‘path-breaking, spectacular and exemplary contributions to the nation, its people and society.’

NMDC Conferred at PRSI Awards 2022 [23 Apr 2022]

The National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (NMDC), swept the Public Relations Awards 2022 conferred by the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), winning the first position in four categories. PM lays the foundation stone of WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar [19 Apr 2022]

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) in Jamnagar, in the presence of the Prime Minister of Mauritius Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, and Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General, World Health Organization (WHO). GCTM will be the first and only global outpost centre for traditional medicine across the world. It will emerge as an international hub of global wellness. Video messages from the Prime Ministers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and the President of Maldives were played on the occasion. Union Ministers Dr. Mansukh Mandavia, Shri Sabananda Sonowal, Shri Munjapara Mahendrabhai, and Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel were among those present.

Government appoints Lt Gen Manoj C Pande as new Chief of Army Staff [18 Apr 2022]

Government has appointed Lt Gen Manoj C Pande, presently Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff with effect from the afternoon of April 30, 2022. Born on May 06, 1962, Lt Gen Manoj C Pande was commissioned on December 24, 1982 in the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) of the Indian Army. During his long and distinguished service spanning over 39 years, he has served in a variety of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments. The Command appointments of Lt Gen Manoj C Pande include Command of an Engineer Brigade in the Western Theatre, as part of Strike Corps and an Infantry Brigade along with Line-of-Control in Jammu & Kashmir. Other important Command appointments include a Mountain Division in the high-altitude area of the Western Ladakh and Command of a Corps, deployed along the LAC and in Counter Insurgency Operations area of Eastern Command.

PM Modi inaugurates Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya in New Delhi [14 Apr 2022]

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya in New Delhi. Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and DoNER Shri G.K Reddy; Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Smt. Meenakashi Lekhi, Union Minister of State for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal; Chairperson of the executive council of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), Shri Nripendra Mishra; family members of former Prime Ministers and a large number of other dignitaries were also present on the occasion. The Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya is a tribute to every Prime Minister of India since independence and a narrative record of how each has contributed to the development of the nation. The Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya has employed technology-based interfaces to encompass heterogeneity in content and frequent rotation of the display.

Iqbal Singh Lalpura has assumed charge as Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities, NCM, in New Delhi today after being re-nominated as Chairperson vide Ministry of Minority Affairs Notification dated 12.4.2022. During his previous term as Chairperson, NCM, he worked tirelessly for the welfare of all the Minorities with a focused approach to ensure that the grievances of the Minorities are addressed and they avail the benefits of the Welfare schemes run by the Government.

NMDC Wins two Awards at 80th SKOCH Summit 2022 [12 Apr 2022]

The largest iron ore producer of India, National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), under the Ministry of Steel awarded one gold and one silver award in the 80th SKOCH Summit and SKOCH Awards recently conducted by SKOCH, New Delhi. The theme for the SKOCH Summit was ‘State of BFSI & PSUs’. NMDC won the Gold Award in the category of social responsibility for the project ‘Promotion of Technical Education & Skill Development in Dantewada District through NMDC ITI Bhansi’ and the Silver Award in the category of digital inclusion for the ‘Project Kalpataru’ for ERP implementation. The awards were received by Shri Amitava Mukherjee, Director (Finance) via video conferencing on behalf of Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Sumit Deb. The SKOCH Awards were given to the winners based on the application submitted on their website, a presentation to the jury followed by three rounds of popular online voting, and the second round of jury evaluation. In addition to the above, NMDC also received the 3 SKOCH – Order of Merit Awards for its exemplary efforts in ensuring seamless digitalization in Project Kalpataru, for its expansive CSR efforts in promoting technical education and skill development in the remote districts of Dantewada, and “Project Safety First” in the category Response to COVID.

DRDO successfully flight-tests Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet technology [08 Apr 2022]

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight tested Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) booster at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on April 08, 2022. The test successfully demonstrated the reliable functioning of all critical components involved in the complex missile system and met all the mission objectives.The SFDR-based propulsion enables the missile to intercept aerial threats at very long range at supersonic speeds. The performance of the system has been confirmed from the data captured by a number of range instruments like Telemetry, Radar and Electro Optical Tracking Systems deployed by ITR. The SFDR has been developed by Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories such as Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune.

Music composer Ricky Kej won his second Grammy in the Best New Age Album category. He won the award along with Stewart Copeland for “Divine Tides”. Bengaluru-based Ricky Kej won his first Grammy in 2015 for his album “Winds of Samsara” in the Best New Age Album category. Indian-American artist Falguni Shah won the Best Children’s Music Album Grammy this year for “A Colourful World”. Shah, who uses the stage name “Falu”, is focused on using her music to send messages of inclusivity and unity. In her Grammy-winning album, she sings about kites, colours and rainbows.

Vinay Mohan Kwatra, India’s ambassador to Nepal, to take over from Shringla as Foreign Secretary [04 Apr 2022]

The government named Vinay Mohan Kwatra, India’s ambassador to Nepal, as the next Foreign Secretary. He will take charge as the Foreign Secretary, when incumbent Harsh Vardhan Shringla retires on April 30. Kwatra is a member of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) with an experience of nearly 32 years in a range of assignments. He has worked in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office from 2015 to 2017 before he went to France as India’s ambassador.

Exercise Varuna 2022 Culminated [04 Apr 2022]

The culmination of the 20th edition of the Indo-French bilateral Naval exercise ‘Varuna-2022’ took place on 03 Apr 22. The exercise this year has an expanded scope cover a broad spectrum of maritime operations. The eventful tactical sea phase of the exercise laid primary focus on advanced anti-submarine warfare tactics, gunnery shoots, seamanship evolutions, tactical manoeuvres and extensive air operations. The units also undertook cross deck landings by integral helicopters, showcasing a high level of interoperability between them. Gun firing and underway replenishment procedures were also exercised between ships. The final phase of the exercise progressed with tapered focus on advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercises. INS Chennai with Sea King Mk 42B, maritime patrol aircraft P8i, French Navy frigate FS Courbet, support vessel FS Loire, and other units exercised on full spectrum of ASW operations. The later part of the exercise also included exchange of sea-riders at sea.

Dr. S Raju Takes over as DG, Geological Survey of India [02 Apr 2022]

Dr. S Raju has taken over as the Director-General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in Kolkata today. He succeeds Shri R. S. Garkhal who superannuated on 31st March 2022. Prior to assuming the present post, Dr. Raju was holding the post of Additional Director General and National Head, Mission-III & IV at GSI HQ. After taking over as DG, GSI Dr. Raju said that the Geological Survey of India is poised to focus continuously on the programs of core national importance in the field of mineral resources augmentation in the country and to aim for closer interactions and engagements with the mining sector, industries and academic institutes of national and international repute.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru, AVSM, NM assumed charge as Deputy Chief Of Naval Staff [01 Apr 2022]

Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru, AVSM, NM assumed charge as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff on 31 Mar 22. Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jan 85 and is a Submarine and Navigation Specialist. In his career spanning over 37 years, he has held a variety of Command and Staff appointments both ashore and afloat. The Flag Officer has commanded INS Shalki, a Type 1500 Shishumar Class submarine, Cadets Training Ship INS Krishna, and Destroyer INS Rajput. He has also commanded INS Satavahana the Navy’s Submarine Training Establishment where he set up the School for Advanced Underwater Warfare. In his staff tenures, he has served in the Directorate of Submarine Operations and Directorate of Nuclear Submarine Acquisition at IHQ MoD (N). He has also carried out duties as Naval Assistant to FOC-in-C (West) and FOC-in-C (South).

Surat gets India’s first steel slag road [01 Apr 2022]

Surat has become the first city in the country to get a processed steel slag (industrial waste) road built as part of a joint-venture project by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Union Ministry of Steel, government think-tank NITI Ayog, and ArcelorMittal-Nippon Steel (AM/NS), at Hazira. The slag is generated from a steel furnace burning at around 1,500-1,600 degree centigrade in the form of molten flux material as an impurity. The molten material is poured into the slag pits for cooling as per the customized procedure and further processed to develop stable steel slag aggregates.
